Wireless power and data over inductive links, the technology for real ULP devices

Wirelessly powered devices and wireless data transfer are ongoing trends. These even accelerate with further reduction of the required device power. In other words, an inductive link is the technology for ULP devices with no or limited space for a battery. Proper power management is one of the key aspects, for several reasons. For medical implants an accurate control of the dissipation is crucial to avoid local heating. For consumer applications, a well-defined and environmental independent user experience is of great importance. Using the case of an eye pressure monitor, this talk will discuss a number of items related to an inductive link, starting with the physical layer. At system level the control mechanism will be explained to cope with the stringent power management requirements for this medical application. The modulation technique is presented that is used to transfer the binary data, collected by the sensor, to the master unit.
